PostHeaderIcon How can Bayes modeling be used to solve the known statistical urn and ball problem?

sample goals

There is one urn. There are multiple colored balls within the same urn. There are five colors (Blue,Yellow,Green,Black and White).No data with regards to how many of each color.

If a sample is taken from the urn, what methods (regarding Bayes etc.) can be used to establish an overall estimation of the population in the urn?

My main goal is to graphically present the population distribution after a sample has been taken.

Any knowledge regarding bayesian updating after the sampling process will be appreciated.

A digital camcorder repair service has set a goal not to exceed an average of 5 working days from
the time the unit is brought in to the time repairs are completed. A random sample of 12 repair
records showed the following repair times (in days): 9, 2, 5, 1, 5, 4, 7, 5, 11, 3, 7, 2. At α = .05 is
the goal being met?

PostHeaderIcon What is the correct statistical sample size for 500000 database records and how did you determine it?

sample goals

I have a formula, n>= (Np(1-p))/(N-1)*D + p(1-p); D = ((magin of error)^2)/((z-alpha)/2)^2. However, I don’t understand how z-alpha is calculated.

My goal is the following: I have converted 500000 database records from my old legacy system to my new system. I don’t want to validate all 500000 records. Instead, I would like to validate some sample of the data. How many records should I investigate if I want a 1% or 3% or 5% margin of error?

The web-based company Oh Baby! Gifts has a goal of processig 95% of its orders on the same day they are received. If 485 out of the next 500 orders are processed on the same day, would this prove that they are exceeding their goal, using a= .025? (see story.news.yahoo.com accessed June 25, 2004)

A bookstore receives 6 boxes of books per month; one box on 6 random days of the month. Suppose that 2 of the 6 boxes delivered are from publisher A, 2 are from publisher B, and 2 are from publisher C. the goal is to find the probability that the last 2 boxes delivered in the month are from the same publisher.

a) describe the sample size ‘S’
b) compute the probability that the last 2 boxes delivered in the month are from the same publisher.
