PostHeaderIcon Dying my hair: Nearly Black to Blonde - Is it possible based on hair-sample test result?

sample goals

My hair is naturally dark brown. I cut off a sample of my hair and –using a bleaching kit I got at the supermarket–managed to get it to a medium (strawberry) blonde in 6 applications. However, my goal is to eventually get my hair to the color of platinum blonde.

So my question is this:
Based on the color change achieved so far, is dying my hair platinum blonde possible?
2/3 of my hair, which is 7 or 8 inches in total from the root in length, has remnants of black dye; will this hinder it’s ability to go platinum?
In response to Nancy H. –

Thank you very much for your advice, however I want it to look artificial. That’s why I asked the question; to determine if that nearly white blonde is possible…

yOU NEED TO STRIP THE DYE OUT FIRST,GET A STRIPPER KIT AND ONLY LEAVE ON UNTIL HAIR STARTS TO LOOK ORANGE,NOT FULL TIME RECOMMENDED ON PACKET.tHEN DYE IT DARK BLONDE{NOT TOO BLONDE OR IT WILL LOOK ARTIFICIAL.pEOPLE SAY THE STRIPPER WILL WRECK YOUR HAIR,IT WONT IF YOUR HAIR IS IN AVERAGE CONDITION AND YOU WONT BE LEAVING IT IN FOR AS LONG AS PACKET SAYS.tHE DARK BLONDE WILL LOOK GOOD AND OVER THE FOLLOWING WEEKS ,WASHING IT WILL SLIGHTLY LIGHTEN IT.iT WILL LOOK GOOD TRUST ME.

If it took 6 applications to get your hair to Strawberry blonde there is no way you should try to get it to a platinum blonde. 6 applications will kill your hair and your scalp. Don’t use a colour stripper either; it will only make it go very orange!!

If your desired result is platinum you will need to be patient. You would need to do it very gradually if you want hair on your head. As a hairdresser I’ve seen so many peoples hair fall out trying to go too blonde too quickly. I recommend going to a salon as you will only trash your hair doing it yourself, and a hairdresser will be able to tone your hair to the correct shade as it lightens.

I agree with becka, 6 applications will kill your hair and scalp - bleach hurts lol! The supermarket blonde kit may not be strong enough. I used 40/12% vol. developer with bleaching powder on my hair which had been dyed dark mahogany/red. I managed to lighten it in half an hour to 4 inches of platinum blonde, the rest slightly coppery. The instructions stated it should be left on for 30-50mins so I’m going to leave it on longer next time. Hopefully it should work for you but remember when you bleach your hair, clip it up to your scalp, put on a plastic cap or shower cap and wear a wooly hat over the top as heat speeds up the process and your more likely to achieve an even colour. Just remember to check your hair every now and again to make sure your not frazzeling it.

Get a wig or have a pro do it.
